“Where wisdom was, quantification will now be.” Leon Wieseltier
In the era of big data, sophisticated analytical tools are used to process massive quantities of information in an attempt to explain non-material dimensions of life such as social interactions, friendship and human desire. The notion that nonscientific understandings must be divided and quantified in order to qualify as credible knowledge is increasingly popular, while opposing views claiming that the mind is not the brain, or that love is not just biology’s bait for sex, now amounts to a kind of heresy. Is the common notion that 'data hold all the answers' true? What are the philosophical and historical roots of the data-driven mindset?
Crossroads-Houston invites you to a public discussion on the history of contemporary Western culture with Dr. Michael Hanby, Professor of Religion and Philosophy of Science, John Paul II Institute at The Catholic University of America and Dr. Carlo Lancellotti, Professor of Mathematics, CUNY, Editor and translator of The Crisis of Modernity by Augusto Del Noce.
The event is open to the public and free of charge.
