A New Possibility: Life without Measure
The experience of accompanying families and newborns through unexpected circumstances
with Dr. Elvira PARRAVICINI, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Columbia University and Candace RICHTER, Co-founder of Bee Mighty
Presented by Crossroads Cultural Center
Can you measure the life of a person? It seems to happen all the time. Achievements, intelligence, talents, appearance, the number of years lived or beautiful experiences had, and even what degree of normalcy someone’s life maintains. Is there something more exceptional to a person than the sum of these measurements? Join us in a discussion with two individuals whose experiences introduce a different criteria.
Dr. Parravicini originally became a neonatologist to save infants, “to help them recover and send them home happy with their parents”. Years later, as the founder and medical director of the Neonatal Comfort Care program, she cares for infants who may only live a few hours. In circumstances nobody would have chosen, Dr. Parravicini follows the needs of her patients and families not only through innovative medical care, but with an attention to reality that gives a surprising discovery.
Mrs. Candace Richter gave birth to her son Shaw at 27 weeks, weighing only 2 pounds. After 122 days in Presbyterian Hospital’s Neonatal ICU, the journey had only begun. Though it took Candace and her husband a long time to accept their family as ‘Special Needs’, amidst the many challenges came an unforeseen gratitude. With no price tag to put on their life with Shaw, Candace and her husband founded Bee Mighty to help similar families who annually spend thousands of dollars out-of-pocket for critical therapy to maximize their child’s developmental potential and quality of life.
