New York Encounter 2016: Spurred by the Promise of Happiness
Friday, January 15, 2016 at 6:30PM
The Encounter opens with poetry, music performed by Christopher VATH, pianist, and a conversation with Christian WIMAN, Poet and Senior Lecturer, Yale Divinity School, and Gregory WOLFE, Editor of Image
Presented by Crossroads Cultural Center and Communion and Liberation
What does it mean to be Spurred by the Promise of Happiness when desire choked by fear appears to be the common experience of our time? As Edgar Lee Masters observed in his poem “George Gray,” we often live like a “boat with a furled sail at rest in a harbor.” Yet we cannot help but desire to "lift the sail/And catch the winds of destiny/Wherever they drive the boat./To put meaning in one's life may end in madness,/But life without meaning is the torture/Of restlessness and vague desire--/It is a boat longing for the sea and yet afraid." With these exceptional men, we will unfurl our sails and seek. The event is open to the public and free of charge. Click here for New York Encounter's Official WebsiteAbout this Event
