Vincent Van Gogh: A Self-Portrait

Discover the beauty of Vincent van Gogh's art...in his own words.

A dramatic reading of van Gogh's letters to his brother Theo by artist Isaac MONTELEONE, accompanied by images of van Gogh's paintings

Presented by Crossroads Cultural Center in collaboration with The Center for Religion and Culture, St. Edward's University

Every genuine artistic intuition goes beyond what the senses perceive and, reaching beneath reality's surface, strives to interpret its hidden mystery. The intuition itself springs from the depths of the human soul, where the desire to give meaning to one's own life is joined by the fleeting vision of beauty and of the mysterious unity of things.~Saint John Paul II’s “Letter to Artists”

This artistic intuition is vividly embodied in the life and work of well-known Post-Impressionist artist Vincent van Gogh. In his letters to his brother Theo, van Gogh shares his desire for beauty and meaning while van Gogh's paintings offer the viewer a way to look beyond the surface.

In his own words, van Gogh stated, "[t]he change that I'd like to try in my art is to paint more figures...[t]his is the only thing that deeply excites me and, more than anything else, makes me perceive the infinite....I'd like to paint men and women with a kind of eternity, once symbolized by the halo, and that we try to re-create by using vibrant colors, with the same radiance."

With our own need for beauty and meaning, we turn to van Gogh for the chance to perceive what lies beneath the surface.

The event is open to the public and free of charge.
