Dana Milbank asks a good question. One answer: when people have a strong cultural and religious identity, their political preferences are just one aspect of their personality. When people are secularized and have weak cultural and social associations, politics becomes a substitute religion and their main existential motivator is hate for the "bad guys." This is also the situation in which they are most easily manipulated by the powers that be (mass media, political propaganda etc.)
